Luka Kauzlaric

Luka Kauzlaric is a Melbourne based freelance photographer specialising in documentary, editorial, news and event photography. He holds a Diploma in Applied Photography from the Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe (NMIT), and a Bachelor of Photography majoring in Photojournalism at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.

He has a strong passion for capturing people’s experiences as they participate in community life. With extensive experience working with communities from different cultural backgrounds - from Flemington’s Horn of Africa immigrants to those struggling to re-build East Timor - Luka has developed an insight into the challenges and aspirations of Australia’s recent arrivals.

In 2008 Luka was commissioned by Moonee Valley City Council to travel to East Timor to document the progress of community projects the Council had funded, including a school for primary-aged children. During this trip he stayed with local families and immersed himself in the day-to-day lives of local people, experiencing their struggles and triumphs. As part of his work in East Timor, Luka spent a large amount of time in Dili documenting the conditions within internally displaced people camps. The result of his work was later exhibited at the Incinerator Arts Complex in Moonee Ponds.

In addition, Luka has played a pivotal role in documenting Flemington’s Neighbourhood Renewal Project, a program designed to empower Flemington’s new arrivals to build capacity in their local community. These photographs have been used to document the milestones of this important project and contribute to an extensive image bank.

Over the years, Luka has honed his photography skills through study, regular work with local councils including Moonee Valley and Stonnington as well as casual work for the Weekly Times and local newspapers.
